“Can you payroll people in America?”
In the chapter draft for Know Everything, Do Anything, Nathan Cafearo recalls a meeting at a London recruitment agency while running the UK payroll business Paygroup.
The agency had been asked to source around 1,000 European contractors for a large project in America. Nathan understood payroll, but did not have a US operation. He hired someone to investigate the setup, created the AmChex name and began designing a website.
After about three months, there was still no usable operating plan. Other commitments intervened, and the opportunity passed.
What this example does
This project revisits that idea with current research, a proposed partner-led model, a website, marketing materials and an admin-system specification.
The research is real. The enquiries are fictional. AmChex is not offering employment, visa sponsorship or payroll services through this website.
Keeping the numbers in context
The chapter mentions a possible £500 monthly fee per worker. Multiplying that by 1,000 gives £500,000 in hypothetical monthly fees before costs. It was not contracted business, earned revenue, profit or a verified modern price.
The chapter’s 48-hour ambition refers to making useful progress on a plan, website and software specification. It is not a promise to establish lawful US employment in two days.
